RE: Professor David Coats

Dear Colleague,

You are invited to a seminar by Professor David Coats from The Work Foundation, London and Deputy Assistant Secretary, Adam Kerslake.

Professor Coats will be discussing: -
• Union Futures: Why progressives should care about the future of organised labour
• Learning from the UK Blair experience: what to do and what not to do
David Coats has been an associate director of the Work Foundation since 2004. He worked for the British TUC for fifteen years, latterly as Head of the Economic and Social Affairs Department. He was a member of the UK's Low Pay Commission from 2000 - 2004 and is currently a member of the Central Arbitration Committee. David has written widely on the problems and challenges facing workers and employers in the UK labour market. He is visiting Australia as a guest of Per Capita, an independent progressive think tank, based in Melbourne, dedicated to building a new vision for Australia.

The Work Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation that brings all sides of working organisations together to find the best ways of improving both economic performance and quality of working life. The core belief underpinning their work is "that mutual respect and motivation leads to "good work" and better performance is supported by rigorous evidence-based research." David says, "At its simplest, the purpose of the Work Foundation, is to promote the quest for Good Work".
Adam will be making a presentation on Unions NSW's new approach to building power; Growth Approach Politics (GAP).

The seminar will take place from 2:30pm-4:30pm, Thursday 3rd July 2008 in Training Room 1, Ground Floor, Labor Council Building, 377-383 Sussex Street, Sydney.

A copy of Professor Coats' paper is attached for your perusal.

Please RSVP by reply or calling 9881 5915 for seating purposes.

Trusting that your Union will participate.

Yours fraternally

Amanda Tattersall
Deputy Assistant Secretary
